 As you can see, Cleo there, in the picture above, is kinda 'In Love' with the moon. The mermaids aren't supposed to look at the moon, and not at it's reflection, either. They get out of control while they are 'Moonstruck' and when they turn back to normal after the moon sets, they completely forget what they did. The full moon is the way they became mermaids in the first place, and a special moon comes once every 50 years, when all the planets are in line with the moon, if a mermaid is in the moonpool on that special night when the full moon passes over Mako, she will lose her powers, forever... And if a mermaid was in the moonpool during a lunar eclipse (Which is happening over the moonpool) then she will lose her powers for half a day, 12 hours.
